Research Centre on Graphene, Layered Crystals and Hybrid Nanomaterials

At a recent event to celebrate the successes of Horizon Europe, the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology the Rt Hon Michelle Donelan highlighted “boundary-breaking” work coming out of the Graphene Flagship.

The Graphene Flagship is an international project funded by the European Commission’s Horizon programme. It brings together 118 academic and industrial partners across Europe with the aim of advancing Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The Core 3 project supports the continued transition towards higher technology readiness levels, while keeping a strong component of fundamental research. Cambridge Graphene Centreplays a pivotal role within the Flagship and is one of the UK partners.

Donelan praised work done under Graphene Core 3, the third major Graphene Flagship project, to harness hydrogen fuel cells. She said that it would help us “take another massive leap forward towards our net zero future”. This project, as the whole Graphene Flagship collaboration, is funded by Horizon Europe.
