Fully funded PhD studentship in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Graphene Technology:

We have an average of 10 fully funded scholarships per annum. A minimum of 6 of them are reserved for UK Nationals or EU Nationals who have studied for three years in the UK. Full student eligibility information can be found on the EPSRC website (http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/Pages/eligibility.aspx). The remaining scholarships can cover EU Nationals. Overseas / Non-EU applicants are not eligible to apply for funding from the Graphene Technology CDT, but can still join the programme if recipient of external scholarships covering the full costs.

1. PhD positions

PhD positions are available every year. Prospective candidates are invited to send the CV and two reference letters directly to Prof A. C. Ferrari (acf26@eng.cam.ac.uk).

Dr Tawfique Hasan (th270@cam.ac.uk) and Dr Felice Torrisi () are also accepting new PhD students in the broad field of nanotubes, graphene and other layered materials for engineering applications. 2.Research Associate in Modelling of Graphene and Related Materials (Fixed Term) 

One position exists for a Research Associate to work on theoretical modelling of graphene and related materials (GRMs). The project is funded by the European Research Council, and based at the Cambridge Graphene Centre (CGC) (www.graphene.cam.ac.uk). The successful candidate will provide theoretical support, via numerical simulations, to complement the CGC experimental activities, in addition to working on more fundamental projects in collaboration with leading national and international theoretical groups and in the context of the Graphene Flagship. Amongst others, the possible projects include the interpretation and modelling of Raman spectra, the theory of non-linear optics, as well as band structure and phonon calculations.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Chemistry or Electrical Engineering, and a proven expertise in the modelling of electronic, vibrational and optical properties of materials using density-functional theory-based methods, as well as a deep knowledge of scientific programming, as demonstrated by publications in major international journals and presentations in major conferences. A solid understanding of the physics of GRMs is required, as well as an excellent understanding of Raman spectroscopy. Experience of beyond-DFT methods (GW, BSE) is highly desirable. Excellent experience in Quantum Espresso, CASTEP, SIESTA is mandatory.

Experience in handing collaborations within EU projects, including reporting and attendance to project meetings is also essential. The role holder will also have the ability to continually update knowledge in this specialist area and engage in continuous professional development. They must also have experience of managing their own workload and working in close collaboration with experimentalists.

3. Research Associate in Growth and Transfer of Graphene and Layered Materials (Fixed Term).

One position exists for a Research Associate to work on growth and production of graphene and layered materials.

The successful candidate will investigate the large area production of graphene, BN, MoS2 and other layered materials, optimize their transfer process, in view of their application in energy, electronics and photonics. This will include design, commissioning, assembling and optimization of new growth/production and transfer equipment. Successful candidates will have a PhD in Electronic Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Chemistry or closely related disciplines and must have proven experience, as evidenced by publications in leading journals, in growth/transfer of graphene and layered materials, as well as device manufacture and characterisation. Applicants lacking a proven track record in graphene growth/transfer will not be considered. Applicants must be highly motivated, capable of working both independently and as part of a team, and with the ability to perform effectively under pressure and deadlines, have good communication skills, the ability to pay close attention to detail and to deal successfully with a wide variety of people and having a willingness to learn.

4. Research Associate in (Opto)-Electronic Devices Based on Graphene, Related Materials and Hetero Structures (Fixed Term).

A position exists for a Research Associate in (Opto)-Electronic Devices Based on Graphene, Related Materials and Hetero Structures.

The aim is to develop a new class of integrated photonic and optoelectronic devices based on layered materials, their heterostructures and hybrid platforms, combining the versatile properties of layered materials with conventional 3d semiconductors. These devices will then be used in a wide range of applications, such as on-chip optical routing, flexible optoelectronics, light emission and optical sensing. This is an ambitious research program, with a strong interdisciplinary nature, across photonics, plasmonics, device physics, electrical engineering and nanotechnology, and it will require the realization of novel devices for wide range of applications such as photodetectors, optical modulators, optical amplifiers, lasers, biosensors etc. based on integrated layered materials and hetero-structures.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Photonics, Physics, Material Science, Nanotechnology or Electrical Engineering with a proven track record in photonics, optoelectronics of low dimensional systems, plasmonics, near-field optics, CMOS technology and nanofabrication, including on-chip optical and electrical characterizations, pump-probe techniques and fast electro-optical measurements. Preference will be given to candidates with proven track record in silicon photonics, fabrication and optoelectronic characterization of graphene, related layered materials or other nanoscale photonic devices, as demonstrated by publications in major journals. A solid understanding of device physics and the physics of graphene and related materials is required.

Experience in handing collaborations within EU projects, including reporting and attendance to project meetings is also essential. 5.Research Associate in High Frequency Devices Based on Graphene and Related Materials. (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Associate to work on design, testing and modelling of high frequency active devices and integrated circuits based on graphene, related layered materials and their heterostructures. The aim is to demonstrate novel active devices for applications at microwave and mm-wave frequencies. Particular focus will be given to the design and implementation of new device architectures and the challenges of pushing the operation frequency of integrated circuits to the THz range.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Physics, Nanotechnology or closely related disciplines. Essential requirement is a proven track record in design, measurements and modelling (linear and non-linear) of high frequency active devices and circuits, particularly FETs, HEMTs, MMICs and HMICs. Experience in simulations and CAD design of RF transistors and integrated circuits, as well as hand-on experience on microwave on-wafer measurement techniques (particularly by vector network analyser and mm-wave modules) are required. The candidate is expected to be competent in transistor and electromagnetic simulation tools such as ADS, CST, HFSS, Silvaco, etc. Preference will be given to candidates with proven track record in high frequency active devices based on graphene and related materials and/or mm-wave and THz active devices, such as THz detectors, amplifiers and oscillators. Experience in scanning microwave microscopy and/or noise analysis is desirable. It is also expected for the candidate to be experienced in optical setups for THz radiation, in particular for photodetectors and imaging.

6.Research Associates on Solution Processed Graphene and Related Materials and Composites x 2 (Fixed Term).

 Positions exist, for two EU-funded Research Associates in the Cambridge Graphene Centre, to work on solution processed Graphene and Related Materials and Composites.

 

The post holder will be located in the Cambridge Graphene Centre, 9 JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0FA, UK.

The aim is to develop a new class of composites able to exploit the mechanical, thermal, optical and electrical properties of graphene and related materials. The post holders will undertake the optimization of inks, dispersions and composites based on graphene and exfoliated layered materials for a wide range of printing and coating techniques. The role holders will be responsible for testing the materials in transparent and conductive composites for photovoltaics, smart windows, touch screens, and flexible electronics devices in general. They will develop stable, jettable inks based on such materials suitable for printing on a broad range of substrates including flexible, paper and textiles. They will develop composites by combining two or more inks of different materials to fine-tune their properties. The role holders will also develop conducting polymer/graphene-coated microfibers and characterise their structural, physical, electrochemical properties and electrobiological functionality, for electronic interconnection, surgical handling and chronic implantation. This is an ambitious frontier research program, with a strong interdisciplinary nature, across engineering, physical, chemical and soft matter sciences, and will require the optimization of inks and solutions based on graphene and related materials, as well as their incorporation in a variety of host substances, ranging from polymers, to glasses, metal, concrete, etc. with the aim of augmenting the mechanical, thermal, optical, or electronic properties of the host material.

Successful candidates will have a PhD in Electronic Engineering, Physics, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Materials Science or closely related disciplines. Preference will be given to candidates with proven expertise in preparation, optimisation, and characterization of composites and inks based on graphene and related materials. Experience in handing collaborations within EU/UK projects, including reporting with frequent and strict deadlines and attendance to project meetings is also highly desirable, as well as experience of managing own workload
